rosemary liss

Monday, November 25, 2013

I stumbled onto Rosemary Liss's tumblr, and I'm oh-so-happy about it. The extra happy discovery was that she is a Baltimore based artist - I love that city (it's where I attended college for 4 years). The texture and color palettes of these sweet canvases capture so well the decor mood I've been in lately - a touch quiet, but absolutely bold and extraordinary.

jimmy marble (& happy weekend)

Friday, November 22, 2013

Happy Friday, ya'll. Sorry for the slight radio silence over here this week - work & less pleasant responsibilities have been lurking. This week I had to give in a bit. Lots of good stuff and plenty in the works for this here space thooough! Yah-oo.

In other news, sometimes, Los Angeles is just plain cool. I was buying jeans at Madewell and Amanda aka @hokaytokay and Jimmy aka @jimmymarble were hangin' out hosting a fun little event. They were the sweetest humans. So down to earth. And then, as you might do once putting a face and a smile to a killer Instagram account, I dove back into their impressive, inspiring work that despite having already been familiar with, revealed itself as completely cosmically awesome to me all over again. The best. I thought I'd post some of my favorite photos Jimmy's taken recently and the 2012 video that killed me when I first saw it, as well as direct you to his shop where you can buy the charming "BE COOL BABY" and "FEAR IS FOR JERKS" banners you've maybe seen around the neighborhood.

Be more like Amanda and Jimmy & fill your days with fearlessness and colorcolorcolor! this weekend.

Paul Wackers

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

I love the organized clutter of these paintings by San Francisco-based Paul Wackers. Each feels charged with so much energy and color and interest, exploring spaces that are both sharply reminiscent of the things we see around us each day and also whimsical and dreamlike. Wackers explains:
"Images surround me as abstract concepts, presented by the curious interaction of forms, feelings, and situations. They offer a glimpse into the way the world is constantly being reloaded with opportunities and options for reinterpretations and impressions... In my paintings I try to create the feeling of getting lost in the thoughts that are easily ignored or put aside. Many of my paintings will come from moments seen in films or articles read in the newspaper or simply from a walk down the street. The images tend to be of non-places where the specifics of them are not important but how the elements within the picture interact as parts of another world that is sometimes jarringly familiar to our own. It might be seconds away from becoming reality or lifetimes in the past as a fleeting memory."

anaise fall/winter

Monday, November 18, 2013

The loveliest. Photographer Brian Ferry captures just the perfect quiet morning vibes for Anaise's new fall/winter lookbook. May we all be so lucky as to have a wall of white brick to pose against.

Camela Guevara

Friday, November 15, 2013

Beads! Beads and watercolor! Charleston-based artist Camela Guevara's beaded works are nostalgic and lovely. Anyone else have a box of seed beads under their beds just waiting for the big reveal?

Patrick Hill

Thursday, November 14, 2013

Thanks to Lauren over at The Sphinx and the Milky Way for introducing me to an artist's work that made me kind of dizzy in a reaaally good way. LA-based Patrick Hill is working some serious angles here. Curious and mystical and so so beautiful.

yo vintage! fall/winter

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Portland-based vintage shop Yo Vintage! is clearly feeling the crunchy-leaf-cool-breeze thing in the air these days. Their new lookbook is most lovely, serving up some darling cool-weather style inspo. My favorite is the white-on-white look - truly, is there any better compliment to white separates than a green knit beanie and orangey red lipstick?! Here's to pretending it's actually fall in Los Angeles from here on out. Though, maybe sans faux fur coat. Too hot for that hotness! Shop pieces here.

boots and pine (& weekend links)

Friday, November 8, 2013

I love websites that visit with creative people in their homes and work spaces. Some of my favorite daily visits are of this ilk - the gorgeous and ever-inspiring Freunde von Freunden, the amazing Closet Visit (which I still cross my fingers will return before too long), The Selby back in the day, Austin-based Rad Lady, and now a new one to add to the list, Boots & Pine. Arden Wray's (um, best name ever?) project began in Toronto, but has recently taken her to New York state, from Manhattan to Brooklyn to the Catskills Mountains. I love the people she has featured so far - so many creative people whose work I admire! - and I can't wait to keep up and see who's next.

Required weekend reading:

A lovely piece in the Paris Review reflecting on one woman's findings from within the pages of the books lining her shelves.

An extensive discussion exploring art as therapy, and the psychological functions of art.

A successful-by-all-Western-standards father muses on his desire to retire as his 20-something musician son.

Japanese artist Tokujin Yoshioka exposed a block of crystal to 6 months worth of Tchaikovsky’s ballet, Swan Lake. The tonal vibrations of the piece helped form the structure of the crystals. Beautiful and fascinating.
